Objectives of the Course To be able to comprehend the basic static and strength information to be encountered in the design, to classify the machine elements according to their properties, to calculate the strengths of the machine elements and to select the appropriate element. To be able to recognize the materials used in production, to have information about the places of use and their properties, to make a selection of materials suitable for the design and mechanism.
Course Content Types of materials used in the industrial field and their properties. Steel Standards, usage areas of steel. Tool steels. Electrical erosion behavior of steels (EDM) and measures to be taken in design. Selection of materials suitable for the mechanism and design. Solidification-Melting Behaviors. Iron-Carbon (Fe-C) Equilibrium Diagram, Heat Treatment of Steels. Non-ferrous metals. polymers. composites.
Classification of machine elements. Connecting elements (Rivets, Bolts, Pins), shafts, pins and axles, wedges. Gear mechanisms, brakes, couplings, clutches, springs, bearings, bearing selection and maintenance. Power and Energy Transmission Elements. Force, moment, equilibrium equations, supports. Motion, acceleration, friction effects.
General Principles in machine design. Force-elongation graph, strain-strain relationship, Stress: Shear stress, Shear stress, Bending stress, Yield stress, Elasticity, Beams, Slope, Deflection, Moment of Inertia, Torsional stress, Buckling stress. Mechanical system design calculations.
