Objectives of the Course The aim of the Nutrition and Dietetics department is to provide students with the basic principles and properties of chemistry, to establish the relationship between chemistry and health sciences, and to enable them to understand the logic of chemical and biochemical reactions.
Course Content Science, scientific thought and scientific method, Definition, classification and properties of matter, SI unit systems, Concepts of atom, molecule, compound, Periodic system and its properties, Chemical bonding and types of chemical bonds, Writing and naming chemical formulas, Concepts of mole, molarity and normality, Avogadro's number and chemical calculations, Simple formula, molecular formula and percent composition by mass in chemical compounds, Concept of solution and solubility, concentration calculations in solutions, acid-base reaction in aqueous solutions and pH concept, Gases, ideal gases and their properties, Definition of organic chemistry, naming and classification of organic compounds.
