Objectives of the Course A writing workshop designed to reinforce academic essay composition skills and introduce students to the practice of writing for academic purposes. It will prepare students for work in high level English courses in which research writing is a requirement. It introduces basic research writing skills including conducting research, note taking, paraphrase, summary, direct quotation, positioning, and MLA or APA style citation. The course will place equal emphasis on macro-level composition skills such as: essay structure, paragraph structure, coherence, unity; and micro-level skills such as: sentence structure, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and mechanics. The other important aim of the course is to develop critical thinking and analysis skills with regard to academic research.
Course Content Academic language skills needed by students to be successful in their academic departments. The course focuses on academic language skills required by all university students as well as specific academic language skills of primary importance for students'?specific fields of choice. Students will be guided through the various stages of academic writing, including planning, researching, collecting and organizing information. This will be done through classroom and take-home exercises on reading and writing practices, discussions, examination and analysis of a variety of academic texts. Students will have an opportunity to lay the foundation of their own academic style using different academic reading and writing tools and strategies.
Course Methods and Techniques Learning Method: Lectures, Participation in Classes, Learning Writing Exercises.

Measurement Techniques: Class Participation, Writing Assignments, Written Exams.
