In the media we read a lot about “Human Rights” issues on and on the other side conflicts occurring among ethnical and religious groups such as in Iraq between Arabs, Yazidis, Turkmens, Kurds and Sunnis, Shiites; rebellion in Syria against the ruling Alawite minority; violence between Israelis and Palestinians in which Muslims, Christians, and Jews struggle with each other besides their national identity; strife between sects like Sunnis, Shiites or Zarathuztras in Iran; the unrest in Afghanistan, Pashtuns, Hazaras, Baluchs, Tajiks, Qirghizs, Uzbeks; and the list goes on. This course aims to enrich students’ understanding of the diversity of the Middle East region and in private Afghanistan from Asia, exploring histories of inter-communal contact and conflict. Our first step will be learning keywords such as; Human Rights, Foundation of Modern Human Rights, Universalism, Cultural Relativism, Rule of Law, Dissent, Torture, Civil and Political Rights, Women’s Rights, Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech, Economic and Social Rights, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Paris Principles, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), International Covenant on Economic, Social & Cultural Rights (ICESCR).Our second step will be to explore the legacy of the Ottoman Empire and the impact of its dissolution. We will also discuss the developments in Europe and the Western World. We will focus our attention on urban centers that fostered inter-communal relations, as well as investigating sites of strife and cases of minority repression. We will read histories, memoirs, and fiction, and view films that help us better understand inter- communal relations, tensions, and conflict arising the the topic of “Human Rights, Ethnic & Religious Minorities”. We will also interrogate the terms for exploring a range of distinctions among majority and minority populations including: religious difference (Muslims, Christians, and Jews); divisions of religious rite (Sunni and Shi’a); entho-linguistic minorities (Armenians, Kurds, and Nubians); national identities (Israelis and Palestinians); cultures of origin (Mizrahi, Sephardi, and Ashkenazi Jews). We will also examine how race, racism in the specified region, and take a short look to the history of slavery factor into modern discourses of identity.
