Course Learning Outcomes: Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1 The student can explain the concept and elements of rights and the fundamental characteristics of human rights, and classify human rights according to different criteria.
2 The student can explain the structure and fundamental principles of the European Convention on Human Rights and its place within the European human rights protection system.
3 The student can evaluate the establishment, structure and functions of the European Court of Human Rights and its role in the implementation of the Convention.
4 The student can explain the admissibility requirements for individual applications to the European Court of Human Rights and the concept of victim status.
5 The student can analyse the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights ratione personae, ratione materiae, ratione loci and ratione temporis.
6 The student can explain the scope of the right to life under Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights and the negative and positive obligations of states.
7 The student can evaluate interferences with the right to life in terms of the use of force, the obligation to conduct an effective investigation and the duty to protect life.
8 The student can explain the scope and absolute nature of the prohibition of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
9 The student can analyse the scope of the right to liberty and security, the lawful grounds for deprivation of liberty and the procedural safeguards afforded to individuals.
10 The student can evaluate the scope of the right to a fair trial through the principles of an independent and impartial tribunal, reasonable time, publicity, equality of arms and the presumption of innocence.
11 The student can explain the scope of freedom of expression, its importance in a democratic society and the conditions under which it may be restricted.
12 The student can examine the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights and make reasoned legal assessments within the framework of fundamental rights, state obligations, proportionality and necessity in a democratic society.
