Objectives of the Course The objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive
understanding of the historical development, theoretical foundations, and
industry applications of sound and music in video games. To develop an
understanding of the relationship between sound effects, ambient sounds, and
music, and to develop the ability to analyze their impact on the gaming
experience. The course also introduces compositional techniques used in game
music, including dynamic and ambient sound design methods. By the end of
the course, students will have acquired both theoretical and practical application skills.
Course Content This course will begin by introducing the historical development of sound and
music in video games, then delve into the fundamental components of game
audio: effects, ambient sounds, interface sounds, and music. The relationship
between game music and narrative, atmosphere, and player experience will be
explored, along with different compositional approaches and the use of
leitmotifs. Sound and music strategies will be discussed through case studies
from various game genres, and the role of sound in the context of player
psychology and emotional engagement will be evaluated. In addition to
theoretical knowledge, students will be provided with practical opportunities
to design original sound effects and music for their own game scenes.
