Objectives of the Course To provide students with the ability to solve the difficulties encountered in the historical, cultural and spatial context during the planning, design and implementation stages of functional changes in existing buildings and spaces.
Course Content This course aims to comprehensively address the process of re-functionalization of existing buildings. While the evaluation of the existing building, development of design strategies, planning and implementation phases are examined, spatial change and transformation processes are emphasized. The reflections of user requirements on the space, the role of environmental effects on the arrangements, the selection and adaptation of materials and the contributions of modern technologies are among the important topics of the course. In addition, information about the effects of legal regulations on the process is presented. Social impacts and sustainability aspects of repurposing projects in terms of ethics and social responsibility are also evaluated. The course aims to develop students' refunctioning skills through field studies, spatial analysis and application examples. In the final projects, students prepare a presentation on the re-functioning process of a specific building and exhibit what they have learned. At the end of the course, with the presentations and general evaluation, students gain the ability to make functional changes on existing buildings and spaces. Students gain the ability to develop innovative and sustainable repurposing strategies by considering historical, cultural and spatial contexts. They also learn to consider user needs, environmental impacts and economic factors in structural and aesthetic transformation projects.
