Objectives of the Course
|
The aim of this course is to provide undergraduate students with the basic knowledge of materials science and engineering. In this course, basic topics such as chemical bonding in materials, crystal structure and defects of solids, diffusion, mechanical properties of materials, methods of increasing strength in materials, solidification, phase diagrams and transformations will be introduced.

Course Content
|
A general introduction to materials science and emphasizing the importance of materials science for materials engineering, basic classification of materials, atomic structure and bonding, types of bonding, crystalline and amorphous structures, directions and planes in crystal structures, defects and faults, concepts of pure metal, alloy, solid solution, diffusion, mechanical properties of materials and control of microstructure and related engineering standards, introduction to phase diagrams and eutectic alloys, improvement of physical properties by various methods and heat treatments, material production methods and materials in the perspective of engineering materials today, engineering ferrous alloys, nonferrous alloys, ceramics, polymers and composites, emphasizing important materials and research areas for future materials.
