2- Being informed about the standards and reporting
Course Content Liquid penetration is a testing method that is used to determine deficiencies on the surface. Deficiencies should be out in the open on the surface to be tested. Deficiencies that are under the surface ora re closed up for any reason cannot be detected by this method. Penetrant fluid which has penetrated the discontinuities by capillary influence is pulled back up to the surface to be tested by the developer. This way, the indications of discontinuity are observed. Discontinuities are those that are out in the open on the surface to be tested. If the discontinuities are of the crack type, the indications will be linear and if the discontinuities are of the pore type, the indications will be round. It can be used in the determination of surface deficiencies that are expected on all metalic and non metalic materials. This method cannot be applied properly when the piece to be tested has a porous structure. Only the deficiencies that are out on the surface can be detected. If the surface is not cleaned properly, the result will be effected directly and negatively. It may be necessary to clean one more time after the testing. The use of chemical substances necessitates special care (for example: wastes). Visual testing is the testing of parameters that can effect quality such as discontinuities, structural abnormalities and the state of the surface of a product by using or not using optic accessories (such as a magnifying glass).
Even though visual testing is seen as a very simple method, it does have its own peculiar subtleties. It is a study that usually must be done before another non destructive testing method is applied. Actually, most application standards that have been prepared for other non destructive testing methods require that visual testing be done first and findings to be recorded. It can be applied to all metalic or non metalic materials. Auxilliary devices such as endoscopes can be used if the accessibility to the surface to be tested necessitates it.
In most cases, cleaning of the surface is not required prior to testing. Actually, the surface must be in a state in which the expected deficiencies can be seen in the best possible way. The study must be done under sufficient lighting and at proper angles of vision.
